Indigestion is also known as dyspepsia. Indigestion is a vague feeling of abdominal discomfort that may be accompanied by burping, heartburn and nausea. It can be chronic or acute and be an indication that you are suffering from a flu or virus. However more commonly, an acute case is associated with mild or serious food poisoning or an intestinal obstruction.

Symptoms of Indigestion

Symptoms of indigestion are bloating, feeling too full, stomach distension, nausea and a “dull feeling.” Flatulence, a rumbling tummy and belching may also be symptoms. Some people may have a sour or bitter taste in their mouth from stomach acid being regurgitated up the esophagus from the stomach. This might also be felt as a pain right under the breastbone and radiate to the shoulders and neck. This feeling can be so intense that some people think they are having a heart attack, when really in this case, the cause is a condition called acid reflux.

Feeling feverish or sudden chills is also common with feelings of indigestion, even if you do not have fever. To discover whether or not you have a fever take your temperature. There is not a single agreed-upon upper limit for normal temperature with sources using values between 37.2 and 38.3 °C (99.0 and 100.9 °F) in humans.

Prevent That Case of Indigestion

There are many was to prevent indigestion from ruining a perfectly good day-

  • Don’t overeat. Overeating is often the culprit when it comes to indigestion. Eat smaller portions and skip having “seconds.”
  • Consume your meal slowly and deliberately. Eating too fast as in “wolfing your food down” can trigger reflexive responses cause your stomach to overproduce acid.
  • Avoid emotional upsets and make sure you are settled, serene and prepared to enjoy your meal and and then once you are eating be mindful focus only on that, not any bad thoughts or drama.
  • Avoid extreme foods. Fatty, spicy or greasy foods can trigger and upset stomach it the over consumption of alcohol.
  • Avoid foods with a lot of acid such as citrus or tomatoes.
  • Limit your intake of coffee, which is also classified as an acidic food.
  • Avoid smoking.Tobacco smoking and sometimes marijuana smoking can also cause indigestion.
  • Be aware of drug side-effects. Antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and aspirin can upset the stomach.
  • Don’t exercise too hard. Vigorous exercise can also “shake up” the stomach contents.
  • Don’t swallow air. Gulped air ends up in the stomach and causes symptoms like belching or flatulence.

Sometimes indigestion can be a symptom of a duodenal or gastric ulcer. It can also be a symptom of such problems as peptic ulcers, malabsorption and food allergies. Disorders of the liver, pancreas or gallbladder can also manifest this symptom.

Over the counter antacids such as Pepto-Bismol, Tums and Alka Seltzer treat cases of indigestion. Be aware however that the overuse of these digestive aids can sometimes result in what is known as rebound indigestion. You can also try the following preventative measures —

Call your doctor if indigestion lasts more than two days, is accompanied by cramps, unexplained weight loss, the vomiting of blood, jaw pain, chest pain or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Indigestion is not usually a serious malady and it only lasts an hour or two for most people. If symptoms persist, immediate referral to physician to rule out more serious abdominal conditions or diseases.
