If you bleach, dye, straighten, perm or even wash your hair too often the result can be chemical hair loss. This type of hair loss occurs because chemical processing dies out hair and strips it of its natural oils causing hair strands to become dry, brittle and snap off at the root. The shaft of the hair can lose it’s structure, softening to the point that it almost dissolves. The hair cuticle can also split and cause breakage anywhere on the hair shaft. However, these conditions are easier to repair than the damage that can be done to the scalp. Chemical processing can dry out the scalp so much that hair follicles become clogged with sebum and no longer produce hair

The pulling wrapping and combing that occurs during chemical hair processes can also cause your hair to fall out.

Here are some direct measures you can take to halt further damage.

Stop shampooing your hair every day and only use a hair conditioner with natural ingredients for a month. Shampoos, even organic or good quality ones, dry your hair out and cause additional breakage.

Do not use a blow dryer, curling iron or hair straightener until your hair and scalp are in better shape. Using these appliances not only requires pulling on the hair but the heat dries out damaged hair strands even more. Let your hair dry naturally and avoid using a towel to dry your hair if you can as even tugging and handling from a towel can cause your hair to break or fall out.

Be sure to wear a bathing cap to protect your hair when in a chlorinated swimming pool. Chemical damage to your hair can also come from too much exposure to the chlorine and disinfectants at the gym.

For extra protection from the chlorine, coat your hair in vaseline and then put your bathing cap on before you go swimming.

Foods That Heal the Scalp and Encourage Hair Growth

Aside from making sure it does not get worse by treating your hair gently and protecting it from chemicals, you can also heal chemical damage to your hair from within.

Eat foods that have a rich synergy of vitamins A and C to help restore scalp follicles that have been mildly burned by bleaching and other chemical processes. Great choices include spinach, mangos, papaya, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and peppers. You can also get an IV vitamin drip once a week to help mitigate the damage.

Consume foods rich in iron to assist the circulatory system by delivering nutrients to the scalp. This includes foods such as Swiss Chard, spinach, red meat, organ meat, beans, organ meats, egg yolks, oysters, shrimps, mussels, lentils, and prunes.

Eat foods that are rich in selenium, which assists with cell repair. The best inexpensive sources are cashews and almonds. Eat just a handful of these nuts once a day. Tuna, halibut, sardines, lean ham, grapefruit, brown rice, and halibut are also good sources of selenium.

Consume foods rich in zinc, which helps to clear hair follicles of excess oil. Foods rich in zinc include spinach, Swiss chard, beans, red meat, organ meats, egg yolks, oysters, shrimps, mussels, lentils, and prunes.

Avoid Substances That Sabotage Scalp Health

Avoid using whey protein in your smoothies. Whey contains hexane which is toxic to hair follicles and can cause more damage.

Avoid eating foods that cause your scalp to produce DHT, a substance that sabotages hair growth. This is found in high cholesterol foods such as butter, lard creamy cheese, and products with coconut palm oil.

Avoid colas and coffee. Caffeinated drink inhibits the absorption of VitaminC which is necessary to help damage hair follicles to heal from chemical burns.

Don’t use artificial sweeteners such as Equal, Splenda and Sugar Twin. These sugar-substitutes prevent hair follicles from absorbing nutrients needed for scalp health such as iron, Vitamin C, E, and K; the nutrient.
