The holidays can be a stressful time for many people and even “good stress” such as the anticipation of travel or seeing loved ones can bring on a feeling of being overwhelmed and not being able to organize your thoughts. However, for many people racing thoughts are triggered during the holidays due to financial issues, a recent separation or divorce or fears about the future.

Do You Suffer From Racing Thoughts?

Racing thoughts can increase anxiety or feelings of unease and can interrupt your ability to focus, concentrate or sleep.

When you have racing thoughts you may experience the following symptoms

  • Your mind feels like it is going a mile a minute
  • You are easily distracted from one moment to another
  • Your brain is obsessively focused on one issue
  • You can’s stop catastrophic thinking
  • You feel like your brain won’t shut off and you are unable to relax

Racing thoughts can result in insomnia, which can cause both physical and emotional problems related to a lack of rest.

How to Stop Your Mind From Racing

Here are some natural, non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical ways to halt your speeding thoughts.

The 478 Breathing Technique – Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four. Now hold your breath in for a count of seven. Exhale completely through your mouth, making another whoosh sound for eight second in one large breath Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three times for accomplishing a total of four big relaxing breaths.

Repeat a mantra. A mantra is a word or a phrase that is repeated over and over again in you mind to displace unwanted or racing thoughts with a serene and empty mind space. The simplest of mantras is the single word OM, which is the single sound that was believed to create the universe. Other effective mantras you can try include phrases such as “Peace, strength and love”, So-hum (meaning I am that), Om Mani Padme Hum (the jewel is in the heart of the lotus), I am that I am, Ho-oponopono (I love you, I’m sorry, Please forgive me, thank you), aham-Prema (I am Divine Love), “I feel. I exist”, “Love is in everything. Love is everything.”

Race your body, not your mind. Going for a jog or run can help disturb that mental circuit that has your brain circling over the same thoughts again and gain. A slow amble does not work as well, as it can possibly encourage rumination.

Vitamin deficiencies, underlying dis-ease, addiction, withdrawal and physical conditions can result in racing thinking as well as many psychological disorders such as depression, panic disorders, thyroid disorders, amphetamine addiction, attention deficit disorder obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic disorder.
