Halloween is almost here which means that millions of people participating in this popular holiday will be handing out candy at their door, including the ever-present package of gummy bears. The problem is that commercially made gummy bears are simply no good for children or adults. The main ingredient is many kinds of Halloween candy is Corn Syrup, most likely derived from GMO corn. Other toxic ingredients found in gummy bear candy include artificial flavorings and colors which can cause all sorts of health and learning problems and gelatin that may have been made from an animal in a less than an ethical slaughterhouse
The handing out of commercial gummy bears at Halloween is not a necessary evil, because you can go-guilt-free about ruining the health of any of the eager children by making your gummy bears at home. All you need to do is procure a candy mold, in the shape of a gummy bear from a store that sells them such as Bulk Barn or Ikea.
Homemade Gummy Bears Recipe
This homemade Gummy Bears Recipe starts with off with a combination of ingredients that serve as a base recipe and from there you can add additional ingredients to create gummy bears in different flavors and colors. However, be aware that pineapple juice does not work in this recipe because the enzymes in pineapple prevent the gelatin in the recipe from solidifying into a gummy bear shape.
The base recipe for creating Gummy Bears is:
- 1 cup liquid (either water or a juice
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons raw honey
- 3 tablespoons unflavored gelatin
(any additional ingredients as described below)
- Combine all ingredients except the gelatin in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
- Gradually whisk gelatin int the mixture, stirring constantly.
- Continue heating mixture over medium-low heat until the gelatin is smooth an all of the ingredients have melded together. Note that at this point, the gummy bear solution will seem more grainy, but it will eventually develop a smooth glassy appearance.
- Pour the mixture into silicone gummy bear molds and place the mold in the freezer for 30 minutes.
- Pop the homemade gummy bears out of the silicone molds and then store them in an airtight container.
*To make Orange Gummy Bears use 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice instead of the water
*To make Cherry Gummy Bears, use 1 cup cherry juice instead of the 1 cup water
*To make Strawberry Gummy Bears use ¾ thawed pureed strawberries and ¼ cup water
*To make Blueberry Gummy Bears use ½ cup pureed blueberries and ½ cup water
Note that instead of the molds, you can pour the mixture into a baking dish greased with coconut oil n then cut the set mixture with a knife or use the cookie cutter to create any type of shape you want – stars, squares or holiday-themed shapes.
Keep in mind too, that you are not absolutely beholden to make actual gummy bear molds. You can make these treats in any candy mold that you like. You can chill it as a sheet that is cut into cubes. Then when it is time for Halloween simply package a few bears in a paper gift bag and hand them out.
