Halloween is coming soon, which means ‘tis the season to have high blood sugar. However, it may be possible to counteract some of the damage that you have done to yourself while sampling a few Halloween treats by sticking to a diet of foods that have shown some promise when it comes to reducing high blood sugar.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider helps lower blood sugar levels by helping the stomach release certain enzymes after a meal. The recommendation is to dilute a shot glass of apple cider into a glass of room temperature water and sip it after every meal.


If you are going to have a snack, have some berries, as they won’t lower your blood sugar compared to other fruit.


Cinnamon is an ancient spice that helps prevent the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, thus preventing spiked blood sugar levels. Cinnamon can be added to beverages, such as coffee and milk and many different types of spicy entrees. It can also be sprinkled on bread, rice pudding or baked goods.


Fish such as tuna and halibut, which have high omega-3 fatty acid content won’t raise blood sugar levels. Protein also helps you feel full, so you don’t over-indulge and gain weight. Fish with high omega-3 fatty levels include salmon, trout, mackerel, and albacore tuna.


Eating raw garlic can lower fasting blood glucose levels. Garlic has no carbohydrates and is, therefore, an ideal diet food. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and can help you improve your immune response

Leafy Greens

The more leafy greens that you can consume in a day, the better your chances are of improving or preventing Type 2 diabetes. That is because all have a low glycemic score of between 2 and 4. Good choices are spinach, collard greens, swiss chard, turnip greens, collards, lettuce and kale

Olive Oil

If you overdose on sugar, having a bit of fat can help to lower your blood sugar. However, if you are going to consume fats, then choose extra virgin olive oil, which has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels more than any other kind of fat. That is why diabetics are often told to go on a Mediterranean diet, which is rich in olive oil.

Sour cherries are one fruit that people with metabolic disorders can have because they have a lower glycemic, meaning that the fructose in them does not impact your blood sugar levels. They also contain anthocyanins which are antioxidants that help protect against cancer.
