perfumeMultiple Chemical Sensitivity or MCS as it is often called is a condition with many symptoms used to describe a person whose immune system and central nervous system has been traumatized by exposure to environmental pollutions, including toxins in the air and in food. MCS is best described as a family of diseases that include chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, Gulf War Syndrome, Sick Building Syndrome, Gluten-Intolerance, and Cacosmia. In fact, many people begin their suffering with Cacosmia, which begins with a lack of tolerance for all scents including perfume, tobacco, solvents and even common grasses and flowers.

The Symptoms of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

The symptoms of MCS mimic some other conditions, such as Lyme Disease, diabetes or meningitis, but if you are having clusters of any of the symptoms described below then MCS may be your issue.

  • Acute intolerance to strong smells, both chemical and natural
  • Acute intolerance to light and noise
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Muscle pain and joint pain
  • Shortness of breath and asthma
  • Chronic urinary tract infections
  • Migraines that last for days
  • Tingling in hands and feet
  • Itching eyes and skin
  • Depression and malaise
  • Foggy thinking
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Anxiety
  • Hyperventilation

These symptoms are attributed to a chronic prolonged and low dose environmental chemical exposure, a matter that is still not well understood by many doctors. One of the many challenges of having MCS is that it can derange the senses, making others believe that our problem might be an emotional or psychological one. It is not helpful that only 16% of individuals report their symptoms to a doctor until their body is completely overloaded by exposure to toxins.

Controlling MCM Is About More than Minimizing Your Exposure

In the past few years, physicians and naturopaths alike have become more convinced that MCM is a physiological condition, with many individuals having a genetic sensitivity and enhanced olfactory organs. The issue is a lack of tolerance to numerous household chemicals and everyday cosmetic and cleaning agents that builds up until the body is overwhelmed and reaches a critical point where it responds with sickness.

Controlling MCM in the allopathic community can be all about medicating the symptoms, instead of treating the root cause of the illness itself. Many doctors and allergists may simply suggest avoidance of the triggers of symptoms, which is unfortunate, as many medicines for pain are addictive and contain substances that can cause further inflammation and intolerance in the body. The goal of a naturopath is to help minimize your body’s toxic load, as well as treat existing inflammation at the same time, but using a healthy, holistic approach.
