Is your neck pain due to whiplash?

One of the most common injuries and under-diagnosed injuries is the “whiplash to the neck injury”, which can cause all kinds of problems from headaches, to numbness to jaw pain. Whiplash and its symptoms can be so painful that it is hard for people to recover from them without consuming and becoming addicted to heavy opioid medications. Thankfully,  changes in nutrition, physiotherapy,  homeopathic treatments, massage, mesotherapy and chiropractic treatments can you get over the acute phase of the injury quickly and prevent the pain from becoming chronic.

What Exactly Is A Whiplash Injury?

A whiplash neck injury is usually the excruciatingly painful result of having the head snap suddenly forward, backward or to the side in a way that temporarily displaces it from its natural position. The type of accident that is most associated with this type of injury is a car accident where one vehicle rear-ends another. You are hit from behind and your head is thrown suddenly forward and back. This serves to jar the entire neck area, the shoulders and also most of the spine. There are about 2 million of these types of collisions every year and even a mild one has the potential to seriously injure your neck and back in a way that seriously limits your mobility and comfort.

However, whiplash is not just caused by auto accidents. A really bad case of whiplash can also be caused by a fall or a sports accident. Any sudden propulsion forward of the body or abrupt stopping of the body while it is in motion can forcibly snap the head in a way that can severely compromise the integrity of the neck vertebra as well it’s surrounding muscles, soft tissues, nerves and blood vessels. This, in turn, can cause a lot of secondary muscular and skeletal problems such as jaw pain, aching shoulders, swelling, cranial pain, neck stiffness,  headaches – you name it.

Whiplash Does Not Always Immediately Present Itself

The insidious thing about whiplash symptoms is that they can develop immediately or within a couple of hours following the accident. Many whiplash sufferers are shocked when they wake up after a nap to find that the whiplash injury just suddenly “set in” even though they felt fine after the impact.

If left untreated the damaged body structures from even a mild case of whiplash can also degrade even more over time. This can cause chronic symptoms that include terrible neck, shoulder and back pain and also chronic headaches.  Lower back pain is also common with this type of injury.

Other symptoms of whiplash include restricted neck movement, arm pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, fainting, dizziness, fatigue or heaviness in the arms and shoulder. A ringing in the ears, nausea, irritability and memory lapses can also be a problem. If you have any of these whiplash symptoms, it is a time that you got a consultation with a chiropractor or naturopath. They can help you figure out if these symptoms are isolated and due to other causes or whether or not you have been suffocating from a “secret” case of it that has escaped a doctor’s diagnosis.
