The layering of these stressors, often conveyed to us through the news or an impact on our environment or bank account, on top of the usual personal physical and emotional problems can feel overwhelming and affect the integrity of every aspect of our being.
Many people are stressed out by what they are seeing or reading on the news and also by climate change, diseases and other things beyond their control. Here are some tips on how to practice self-care and survive, when current events and other societal impacts on your life begin to feel overwhelming.
#Turn off the television and radio every now and then and go for a walk in the park. I am not suggesting that you ignore what is going on in the world. Simply take a break from it so that you can sort your thoughts and deal to any reactions that you might have towards social media, the press or announcements from a political office. Realize to that news bytes on television and in social media are designed to excite you and provoke you into reactionary condition. In a lot of people, this raises their cortisol levels, blood sugar and makes them very angry or depressed. Getting away from the upsetting news can help your physical self-calm down and offer your mind the opportunity to think things through and choose a rational reaction and strategy to deal with what is upsetting you.
#If the stressful situation is impacting you in a very real physical, economic or physical way, selectively change the way you react and start setting goals. One of the most important things that you can do to alleviate personal emotional and physical stress is to detach emotionally from what is going on and choose how you are gong to react to it. It is then in your best interests to coolly and with a calculated determination, make a list of what you can do to better change the situation, and then take the steps to follow through on that plan. Do not give into lethargy, depression or hopelessness, as you will feel much better if you practically do something about it. Choose your battles wisely and avoid exhausting yourself by trying to fight circumstances that cannot be changed.
# Resist self-medicating behaviors such as binging on junk food, smoking or getting drunk. Addictive behaviors tend to trap people in a cycle of shame when the results of their attempt to escape their feelings puts them in an even worse physical, psychological and economic situation. Sobriety and discipline are needed to dig yourself out of a deep hole, even if all you have is a tiny spoon to do so. Make a plan; find the people who can help you to get things done and act!
#Tell yourself “I got this!” and believe it. Having faith in yourself and your own ability to raise yourself up out of a tough situation goes a long ways towards helping you develop a rational, proactive plan for getting over the issue. Sometimes it is a lot easier to stew in an overreaction such as rage, depression or hysteria, rather take charge of the way you react to stress. Remember too that in tough times, that the setbacks that you might encounter as you try to improve your situation are even worse than usual, so avoid internalizing any “bad luck” that might come your way. Chances are that what is happening in your life has nothing to do with any choices you have made especially if the change is the result of a change in government, health plans or due to something like a climate or environmental disaster.
#Take care of yourself physically as best as you can. Sometimes this can be a real challenge if the problem affects you financially or physically or if it affects your home base of operations. Do you are very best to take prescribed medications, eat balanced meals and exercise regularly. Getting enough rest at night is also important to ward off feelings of helplessness in overwhelming circumstances.
The bottom line is that you need to take care of yourself, whether you are suffering from an episode of acute stress (that lasts weeks or months) or chronic stress (that is or may affect you for a few years.
